New England Aster (Aster novae-angliae)

 

New England Aster is an adaptable plant covered in long lasting purple flowers with yellow centres. A tall grower in sunny, moist conditions, while in drier, shadier sites it is shorter and blooms are less abundant. In the garden you can also cut it right back for a more controlled, bushier plant before it blooms. 

 

Height: 3-6ft

Bloom period: late summer to fall

Exposure: full sun to partial shade

Moisture: moist to dry

Native Habitat: fields, meadows, moist prairies

Wildlife: attracts butterflies and bees; Asters are the larval host plants for many of the cresent and checkerspot butterflies

    New England Aster is covered with long-lasting purple flowers with yellow centres - a stunning sight. The typical late summer and fall combination of the New England Aster and the Goldenrods (Solidago spp.) will get me in the feels every time. There is just something about the union of purple and yellow..
