Cup Plant (Silphium perfoliatum)

 

Everything about this plant is over-the-top and dramatic! Its large leaves clasp the stem creating a fascinating water-retaining vessel that gives the plant its name; its prolific yellow blooms last well into the fall; its stem is thick and square-ish; hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and birds loves the open-faced flowers for its nectar and seed; and its profuse seeds will have you finding baby cup plants volunteering everywhere. Did I mention they can be 9 ft tall?

Exposure: full sun to partial sun

Moisture: average to dry; drought tolerant

Native Habitat: meadows, prairies, woodland edges

Wildlife: attracts hummingbirds and butterflies for nectar; birds for the seeds
