Indian Grass (Sorghastrum nutans)

 

Tall and graceful with bright yellow flowers that flutter in the wind. Seedheads and fall leaves are golden bronze. Grow it in masses for a wild look to your garden or as a focal point.

 

Height: 3-8ft

Bloom: late summer to fall

Exposure: full sun

Moisture: average to dry; drought tolerant

Habitat: prairies, dry fields

Wildlife: attracts birds, which eat the seeds; larval host plant for the little wood satyr butterfly and the pepper and salt skipper

  • PRODUCT INFO

    An upright, clump-forming grass with broad, blue-green blades and a large, plume-like soft golden brown seed head becoming metallic bronze or copper colour in late summer (August blooms). Indian Grass will stay upright in winter and the dried seed & foliage will assume an amber hue. Providing year-round interest in full sun to partial shade, Indian Grass stands 3-8 ft with a 2-3 ft spread tolerating anywhere from rich soils, to dry to moist. As if this show-stopper needed any further convincing, it provides and excellent food source for wildlife, attracting songbrids.
