Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa)

 

The signature of the prairies and northeast, Wild Bergamot is a must for a prairie or meadow garden. Very easy to grow as it is incredibly versatile to garden types. Only trouble you'll find is it's prone to powdery mildew on the leaves when it is crowded/insufficient airflow.

Bloom period: summer

Exposure: full sun

Moisture: average to dry; drought tolerant

Native Habitat: prairies, old fields, thickets

Wildlife: attracts butterflies, hummingbirds & bees; food plant for larval gray hairstreak butterfly

    Lavender-indigo-purple flowers shaped like a jester's hat. Blooming in early summer and lasting for weeks. Deadheading flowers will extend the bloom period. Leaves emit Earl Grey tea smell when crushed.
